"Just a load of sheep"...."Like a lamb to the slaughter"....."He looks sheepish"......"I might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb".....and so on. There are plenty of such expressions, almost all of them emphasing the negative aspects.
Yet in reality, sheep are actually intelligent animals who deserve better credit than most people give them. I ought to know, as I had a flock of sheep for a good number of years and still have two ewes whom we are keeping "for the duration". We gave them all names, and some of them would come when we called just their name and not that of another.
