  • My cat rubs her tail on the rug

Our cat has recently started rubbing her tail on the rub -- as if she has an itchy tail and is trying to scratch. (She's rather "fluffy" so she may not be able to reach the area to wash well.) The result is a rug with streaks across it -- which doesn't go over well with my wife!

Our vet clipped the hair around her anus and suggested we use a couple of lotions that would relieve itching, but so far no major changes that we can see. Before we try another vet, I wonder if anyone has had similar problems?

I've had cats all my life, but I don't believe I've ever seen one do this. With dogs, it's often common (especially in some breeds, I think) and they're usually doing it to express the anal glands. But I don't know if that would cross over to cats.

Since she's leaving streaks on the carpet, though, makes me wonder if there's more going on. And if the creams aren't working or don't appear to give her any relief, that would cause me to wonder, too.

I think I would be considering getting a second opinnion from another vet.

Sorry, I'm not really being very helpful, am I? :)

    Keep us posted.

Thanks. Your information was helpful. We've been using the cream for about a week and will monitor to see what happens. If it continues, we'll try another vet.

          Doing better

She's doing much better. It turned out to be a vaginal infection and we've been medicating her for about a week now. She's also on a diet -- much to her dismay!

          Thanks for asking.

Hmm, I would have never thought of that. But I can identify with her! That certainly would cause her to be miserable and rub the tail on the floor, etc. I'm glad the medication is working!

Diet: a four-letter word no one wants in their vocabulary!
